CHICAGO – AACC welcomed thousands of medical professionals and healthcare leaders at the 70th AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo from July 29–August 2. The meeting showcased advancements in clinical testing technology and research that improve the ability of healthcare providers to diagnose patients quickly and accurately and ensure that patients get effective medical treatment.

As of Wednesday, August 1, more than 20,000 laboratory medicine professionals had registered for the meeting, which is the highest meeting attendance AACC has ever had in Chicago. It is also the highest number of attendees that have ever come to the meeting in a location outside of California. More attendees are expected today, the last day of the meeting.

Highlights of the conference program included five plenary talks presented by scientific luminaries on subjects ranging from precision cancer therapeutics to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) new Essential Diagnostics List. Brian Druker, MD, winner of AACC’s 2018 Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship Award, delivered the opening keynote on his research that led to targeted treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia, which enables patients to forego toxic chemotherapy.

Monday’s plenary speaker, Kenneth Setchell, PhD, outlined how mass spectrometry can illuminate the underlying molecular cause of disease and pave the way for life-saving medications. Tuesday’s plenary with Denise Galloway, PhD, described the journey of discovery that resulted in the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, as well as the substantial work still needed to increase HPV vaccination rates. On Wednesday, Rossa Chiu, PhD, explored the significant impact of cell-free fetal DNA analysis on prenatal testing and care. And in today’s closing keynote, Timothy Amukele, MD, PhD, and Lee Schroeder, MD, PhD, discussed how the WHO’s Essential Diagnostics List promises to advance patient care in resource-limited countries by improving the quality of and access to laboratory testing.

Additionally, in a competition to win AACC’s Disruptive Technology Award, three biotech innovators—Ativa Medical, GNA Biosolutions, and Two Pore Guys—presented data on portable tests that could help more patients get accurate diagnoses. GNA Biosolutions won with the company’s ultrafast molecular diagnostic system called pulse controlled amplification, which could make it easier to perform infectious diseases tests in regions without access to hospital laboratories.

AACC Strategic Plan 2016-2018

AACC has made tremendous progress in implementing its previous Strategic Plan, set in place in 2013. The result of an intense process, the 2013-2015 plan included five goal areas and 19 strategies to guide the association’s activities as it worked to advance its mission. The 2016-2018 plan builds upon the previous plan and the successes realized as a result of unwavering commitment to executing that plan. In the context of current trends, the new plan stays true to the association’s vision and mission, maintaining a focus on constant priorities even while extending the plan's strategies to ensure AACC meets the needs of the full breadth of professionals in today’s laboratory medicine environment.

AACC’s Vision:
Better health and healthcare through laboratory medicine.

AACC’s Mission:
AACC provides global leadership in advancing the practice and profession of clinical laboratory science and medicine.

Direction and Priorities for 2016-2018

Laboratory medicine is rapidly evolving as a result of biomedical discoveries, innovations in technology, and the changing healthcare environment. The shift toward outcomes-based payment models has already begun and we must adjust the way we think about the business of laboratory medicine. As medical knowledge continues to expand, clinicians with vast knowledge of biological processes underlying disease cannot also have deep knowledge of the science underlying laboratory tests. With their specialized doctoral-level training in the science of tests, laboratory directors provide this unique knowledge to the healthcare team. With an ever-growing array of new diagnostic discoveries and technologies, the laboratory director is crucial to ensuring the right testing paradigm is applied and the results interpreted in the context of all available knowledge.

As the premier association for laboratory medicine professionals, AACC must emphasize cutting-edge research in its science and education programs. This approach will address the needs of doctoral-level members in keeping abreast of the latest developments. Further, AACC must be known among all clinical laboratory professionals as the place where they can network and nurture valuable collaborations. AACC must be positioned well to enhance general awareness and understanding of the unique expertise its members bring to the healthcare team and to serve as the voice of the field in important policy matters. Finally, AACC must ensure sufficient resources to thrive as an organization so that it can continue to offer its valuable programs and services to its members and stakeholders.

In 2013, AACC’s leaders called on members to be change partners engaged in advancing the association’s mission and vision. Many answered that call and remain active in AACC initiatives and programs. Many more volunteered in early 2016 to serve on one of the new committees instituted as part of the 2016 governance changes. As we move into the next phase of implementing the strategic priorities first identified in 2013, and refined in the current strategic plan, we will continue to rely on the active participation of AACC’s dedicated volunteer leaders.
